About Newcastle

Iconic bridges, Newcastle Brown Ale and the Great North Run are just three of the things Newcastle upon Tyne is noted for.
A healthy sporting tradition is another, and the city’s involvement on the football scene is no exception.

Its 52,000-seat St James’ Park stadium has been the home of the Premier League team Newcastle United since 1892, when the club was founded. The name of the stadium has been the subject of much controversy since November 2011, when it was announced that it would be renamed the Sports Direct Arena for sponsorship reasons.

Most recently, St James’ Park was a football venue for the London 2012 Olympics.

Newcastle, whose traditional sporting rival is nearby Sunderland, is also home to a number of other non-League football clubs, including Newcastle Benfield and West Allotment Celtic.
